SUMMER IMMERSION PROGRAM - DESIGN

Academic Themes

  1. Design as Inquiry

    Students will be introduced to design as a way of questioning, observing, and interpreting the world. They learn to frame problems and uncover insights through structured curiosity.

  2. Observation & Empathy Lab

    Focusing on understanding people, behaviours, and contexts through human-centred methods. This class builds sensitivity to user needs, emotions, and lived experiences.

  3. Visual Communication Foundations

    This session explores how images, symbols, and typography convey meaning. Students learn principles of layout, hierarchy, and visual storytelling.

  4. Culture & Material Studies

    Here, students examine how artefacts reflect cultural values and histories. It encourages participants to decode symbolism, craft traditions, and material narratives.

  5. Design as an Interdisciplinary Practice

    Understanding the intersections of design and other disciplines such as psychology, marketing and entrepreneurship.

  6. AI in Creative Practice

    AI will be explored as a collaborator in ideation and creation. The faculty will facilitate a discussion on the authorship, bias, and ethical implications in creative workflows.

  7. Exhibition Narrative & Audience Design

    Focusing on how ideas are curated and staged for public viewing. Students will design visitor journeys, interpretive text, and spatial storytelling.


Immersive Themes

  1. Ceramics & Clay Studio

    This hands-on session will introduce students to working with clay as a material. It will focus on form development, tactile exploration, and three-dimensional thinking.

  2. Craft Exploration Lab

    This session introduces traditional craft practices and techniques. Connects making with cultural storytelling and material intelligence.

  3. Robotics & Interactive Making

    Students build simple moving or responsive artefacts. This encourages mechanical thinking and creative technology integration.

  4. AI Creation Studio

    Here, participants will apply prompt-based tools for visual and media generation. Explores hybrid workflows combining human imagination and machine output.

  5. Storytelling & Embodied Expression

    At this session, students will  engage in exercises to explore space, gesture, and narrative aimed at building confidence, collaboration, and expressive communication.

  6. Sound & Instrument Making

    Students design and build playable sound objects. Connects rhythm, material, and auditory experience.

  7. Studio Visit / Guest Expert Interaction

    Aimed to provide real-world exposure to professional design practice. Encourages reflection on careers, processes, and industry ecosystems.
