Awasthi is a historian of Sanskrit intellectual culture, particularly during the late second millennium. Her research interests include Mīmāṃsā, Vedānta, Rāma narratives (in Sanskrit and the vernacular), and bhakti, as well as questions around religious experience. While working primarily as a historian, Awasthi is also interested in exploring the possibility of combining historical rigour with a “theological” approach in some of her work.
Awasthi has also brought her research to a broader audience through her work as writer and researcher for The Illustrated Ramayana, 2020 (Dorling Kindersley) as well as by contributions like the translations she provided for Shakti: An Exploration of the Divine Feminine (2022) or Along the Ramayana Trail (2025). In addition, she has been invited to serve on Textbook Development Committees by the NCERT.
Currently, she is working on a monograph on Rāma narratives, in addition to ongoing projects on different aspects of Mīmāṃsā and bhakti.
