Prof. Milind Sathye is Professor - Finance at FLAME University. He holds a Doctorate Degree in Commerce in accounting from the University of Pune, a master’s degree from the University of Mumbai and a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from University of Pune. He completed his cost accountancy qualification from the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, company secretaryship from the Institute of Company Secretaries of India and is a certified associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers. He is a Fellow of CPA, Australia, and Financial Services Institute of Australasia.
He began his career as a trainee cost accountant with Mahindra Electro-Chemical Products Ltd. Thereafter, he worked in the Indian Banks’ Association, and the Union Bank of India for a few years. Subsequently, he worked in the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), its outfits, the National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and the Bankers’ Institute of Rural Development (BIRD), for 17 years. The position that he last held was that of a Deputy General Manager. In this period, he worked among others, as a project manager World Bank pilot project and as a nominee director on the board of a regional rural bank.
After migrating to Australia, he worked in the Australian government (Department of Treasury), the University of Southern Queensland, and the University of Canberra for about 30 years. He was the only academic selected and nominated by the University of Southern Queensland for the 2000 Australian Award for University Teaching - a national award given by the Prime Minister of Australia. Over the years, he has taught courses in auditing, management accounting, bank risk management, corporate finance, personal financial planning, and business ethics, among others.
He has published 73 articles in refereed international journals so far, of which close to 40% were in ABDC A*/A or in Q1/Q2 journals of Scimago, JCR/Cite score. Nearly half of his papers have received citations exceeding 20 at Google Scholar. Of these, the papers published in top-tier journals like the International Journal of Bank Marketing, European Journal of Operations Research, and Journal of Banking and Finance have received citations that exceed 2060, 860 and 720, respectively (as of 7 August 2025). Importantly, the citations include those from the World Bank, Federal Reserve Bank, Bank of Italy, Australian Government, and the Asian Development Bank, signifying the high impact of his research.
Teams under his leadership have won many external competitive grants that included research grants from the Society for Worldwide International Financial Transactions (SWIFT) London, the University of California IMTFI (funded by Bill & Melinda Gates foundation), the Australian government, and the Malaysian government. He has supervised over 20 DBA/PhD and other higher degree research (HDR) students to completion and has examined HDR theses of students from the ANU, Uni of New Castle, Macquarie, University of Queensland, Western Sydney University and others. During his tenure in RBI/NABARD/BIRD, he carried out many field studies.
He has published four scholarly books, several working papers, and three bank risk management textbooks (publisher Wiley & Sons). Currently, he is authoring one textbook each on bank risk management for Palgrave Macmillan in the U.K. and World Scientific in Amsterdam. He has presented at many international academic conferences around the world and received accolades for his work, including a best paper award at the Paris conference. Several international conferences on fraud, anti-money laundering, and other areas held in Australia and overseas invited him as a keynote speaker. His current research interests include forensic accounting and financial crime, fraud, anti-money laundering, efficiency and risk management in financial institutions, microfinance, sustainability reporting, and corporate governance.
His significant public policy contributions are evidenced by invitations for submission and appearances for hearings received on many occasions from the Australian Parliament’s Senate Economics Committees. His recommendations have been included in the respective committees’ final report, and one of these led to a policy change.
He worked as a consultant finance for SAARC project (1994), Australian National Audit Office assignment to audit the Clean Energy Finance Corporation of Australia (2020), and ABDC committee to set learning standards in finance (2015-2016). He was Special Advisor to the Government of Australia (Department of Industry) for the Major National Research Facilities Project in 2002. He has also worked as an expert witness in court cases in banking and finance area in the Victorian Supreme Court, the Federal Court of Australia, and others.
He designed and delivered training programs for anti-money laundering officers of Commonwealth Bank of Australia (2008), China Everbright Bank, Shenzhen (2009), AUSTRAC officers (2019), and Australian Customs (2020) besides many other training programs, for example, for South African parliamentarians and the Chinese Youth Federation. In India, he worked as a faculty member at the BIRD (then jointly owned by the Reserve Bank of India and NABARD) and conducted many training programs on bank management for senior bank executives and bank directors. He has run executive development programs in finance in Australia and overseas through the PMP of the University of Canberra.
The Australian and overseas media regularly consult Prof. Sathye on banking and finance issues. In recent times, he has appeared on Bloomberg Hong Kong and New York, ABC 7.30 Report, ABC News, ABC International, ABC News Radio, 7 News, the Alan Jones Breakfast Program, and Italian, Colombian, German, Portuguese, South Korean, Singaporean, Hong Kong, and Swiss print media/radio. His online interview on Bloomberg Hong Kong about the Commonwealth Bank money laundering scandal was hosted by NASDAQ at its website.
He has received several awards that include the Asian Development Bank-Japan Scholarship and the Lord Aldington Banking Research Fellowship (1992). The Governor of the RBI bestows the Lord Aldington award to a single bank officer nationwide, while the Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory, Canberra, bestowed an award for his contributions to accounting, banking, and finance (2018).
He volunteers as an educational advisor to the Hindu Council of Australia and conducted courses on Hindu philosophy in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and India. He has delivered talks on Hindu philosophy at the Nan Tien Buddhist Institute, Wollongong, Indian High Commission, Canberra and St Xavier College, Canberra. The Infinity Foundation in Australia hosted his talk on Hindu philosophy which is available online. Hindustani classical music, yoga, regular long walks, reading and watching Hollywood and Netflix (thriller and action movies) are his hobbies.
