Malati Rao completed her MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University, Philadelphia, MA in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi and BA in English Literature from St Stephen’s College, Delhi
BIO

Prof. Malati holds a Master’s Degree in Film and Media Arts from Temple University, Philadelphia and another Master’s Degree in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi. She has completed her Bachelor’s Degree in English Literature from St Stephen’s College, Delhi.


She has over ten (10) years of work experience in both industry and academia. She was associated with Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication, Pune, Temple University, Philadelphia and Xavier’s Institute of Communication, Mumbai. 


She has been making documentaries for the last decade, several of which have been broadcast on public television. Handmade in India - documentary on India’s craft traditions, Born Behind Bars - about children growing up in prison, have been awarded and screened at several film festivals. She has also won Best Woman Director at the Bangkok International Documentary Awards in 2020 for The Geshema is Born - documentary about Tibetan Nuns and their education. She is currently directing a documentary produced by Drishyam Films, India and NHK Japan. Malati’s films have been part of several international pitching labs likes Docedge Kolkata, European Social Documentary (Eco Doc) and Tokyo Docs to name a few.
