Every year, on Independence Day in India, several films consistently capture the attention of audiences, including Lagaan (2001), Rang De Basanti (2006), Chak De! India (2007), Shershaah (2021), and The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002). These films are not just popular for their cinematic appeal but also for the emotional resonance they evoke, particularly on this significant national day. As the famous Polish film director, producer, writer, and actor, Roman Polanski, put it, “Cinema should make you forget you are sitting in a theater.”
Films stir emotions, and we analyze what psychological effects they have on viewers. By analyzing the narratives and historical contexts presented in these movies, we can gain insight into how they contribute to a sense of patriotism, national pride, and collective identity. Each film offers a unique portrayal of Indian history and culture, weaving together elements of heroism, sacrifice, and resilience. Understanding the emotional responses elicited by these films helps illuminate how they shape viewers’ perceptions of national identity and heritage on Independence Day. These movies serve not only as entertainment but also as powerful tools for evoking reflection, pride, and connection to India’s rich historical tapestry.
A wave of patriotism sweeps over India on August 15th each year. For many Indians, watching a film with family on Independence Day remains a cherished tradition. Researchers argue that people often select media content to influence their moods, which explains why patriotic films are popular during national holidays—they tap into emotions like pride and nostalgia (Zillmann, 2000). Films that recount the trials and tribulations of our past bind the country in a collective nationalistic sentiment, reinforcing our common identity and fostering feelings of unity, courage, and accountability. These movies offer visual reinforcement of our shared history, evoking a sense of pride, patriotism, and a renewed commitment to contribute to the nation. Watching these films brings us closer to our struggles, identity, and respect as a nation.
A myriad of media content exists that helps facilitate the audiences’ connection to the tricolor. We hereby analyze the emotions elicited by five popular patriotic Indian films watched by audiences on Independence Day.
LAGAAN (2001)
The portrayal of the British Raj and its impact on the Indian population during the 1900s elicits responses of anger and contempt for those responsible for the derogatory treatment and oppression. This reaction from the audience highlights the film’s ability to evoke historical empathy and anger towards injustice.
THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH (2002)
This movie leaves one feeling pensive, replaying the incidents in our memory. It gives a sense of solidarity with our country and its trials. This reflective mood fosters a sense of closeness to our roots and an inner compulsion to do the right things, embrace bravery, and act with purpose. One feels thankful and admires the Indian freedom fighters, indicating the film’s potential to evoke long-lasting emotional and cognitive engagement with national identity and history.
RANG DE BASANTI (2006)
As the narrative progresses toward the climax, where characters take charge to change the system, it elicits a sense of excitement and fervor, anticipating positive results. This reflects a psychological response to narratives of empowerment and rebellion against corruption and injustice. A stronger sense of righteousness and a tendency to advocate for justice follow the film. The film successfully instills a sense of duty and moral alignment with the cause.
CHAK DE! INDIA (2007)
This storyline leaves little room for parallel thoughts. The training scenes leading up to the match, showcasing the growth of a shared purpose among the athletes, evoke a sense of vigor, energy, and strength. It creates a compelling urge to engage in physical activity and fills one with restlessness.
SHERSHAAH (2021)
In this film, during the war scenes, audiences experience intense emotions of trepidation, excitement, pride, and vigor. As the scenes unfold, showcasing both the physical and moral triumphs of our nation, a profound sense of pride and unwavering confidence in our country’s strength surges amongst viewers.
Thus, watching patriotic films like Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Chak De! India, Shershaah, and The Legend of Bhagat Singh can profoundly impact viewers by stirring deep emotions related to morality, righteousness, bravery, justice, and vigor. These emotions do not merely fade away once the credits roll; instead, they seep into our everyday life and influence how we approach various situations.
For example, the valor and resilience depicted in these films might inspire one to tackle challenges with greater determination, while the themes of justice and righteousness may shape our sense of fairness and ethical behavior in personal and professional interactions. The emotional and psychological impact of such powerful storytelling highlights how art does more than entertain—it actively shapes our attitudes and behaviors.
This phenomenon underscores the idea that our engagement with art and media plays a significant role in forming our values and guiding our actions. As Jim Rohn, the American entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker aptly put it, “Attitude is greatly shaped by influence and association.” The films we watch and the stories we connect with do mold our perspectives and influence how we respond to the world around us. Through the lens of these impactful narratives, we witness how the art we consume contributes to our evolving sense of self and our approach to life’s challenges.
