FLAME University’s new B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Science will equip students to use computing as a lens to understand and engage with the world

FLAME University, the pioneers of liberal education in India, has added a B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Science to its array of undergraduate liberal education courses. This inter-disciplinary major is designed for students who see themselves as change agents on a path of scientific discovery to find innovative solutions to problems faced by society.

The past couple of decades have witnessed rapid technological development at a pace unmatched in the history of mankind. The power of digital networks combined with computational thinking has changed the world as we know it. This requires that the new generation of computer scientists are trained not only in the core area of computer sciences but also are aware of the disciplines that inform it and the areas that it influences while having the design sensibilities and entrepreneurial energy to build truly great products and make an indelible impact on society.

“Our program will equip graduates to use computing as a lens to understand and engage with the world,” explains Dr. Aamod Sane, Chair – Computer Science, FLAME University. Dr. Sane adds that the program does not have the traditional technology focus but looks at Computer Science more as an enabler for other disciplines.

The B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Science at FLAME is rooted within the broad context of liberal education. While it provides a strong foundation in the theoretical and practical aspects of the discipline, the approach is inter-disciplinary with a heavy focus on the understanding and solution of computational problems that arise in the social sciences, humanities, business, design, or the physical and natural sciences.

The computer science curriculum is composed of four broad requirements that include the core, breadth, depth and a project. While the core lays a strong foundation, the breadth will survey the areas in which computing plays a role. The depth will include specialised courses in data mining, artificial intelligence, computer security in addition to other applications. The program culminates in the graduation project which provides a platform for applying the learnings to solve a problem of practical interest.

Besides the traditional careers in programming or coding, graduates can consider working in artificial intelligence or big data or pick a pathway through arts, public policy, design or data visualisation. With every field now connected to technology in some way or another, students who can work at the intersection of disciplines stand to gain. Creativity, critical thinking and human interaction skills are likely to succeed in the age of automation, IoT and artificial intelligence.

The selection process for the undergraduate program at FLAME includes an admission test (FLAME Entrance Aptitude Test / SAT/ ACT), Essay, SOP and Personal Interview amongst other parameters. In order to be eligible to pursue the Honours degree program in Computer Science, students must have passed Mathematics as one of the subjects at 12th or equivalent level.
