The latest happenings in the FLAME Community

FLAME University, the only Indian member of the Global Liberal Arts Alliance (GLAA) will be hosting The Global Liberal Arts Alliance Institute’s event, ‘Leadership and Liberal Arts: A Foundation for Social Good’ event in its very own campus in Pune from June 18-20, 2018.

The GLAA is an international, multilateral partnership of American style liberal arts institutions with the goal of supporting excellence in liberal arts education on a transnational basis. The only global alliance of its kind, the GLAA presently has 29 institutions representing 17 nations in the Alliance membership. FLAME University is the first and only Indian institution to be selected in this prestigious alliance.

The Global Liberal Arts Alliance Institute’s, ‘Leadership and Liberal Arts: A Foundation for Social Good’ is exploring ways that Alliance institutions articulate the role of liberal education in the development of leadership for social good. This exploration will encompass those aspects of liberal education that Alliance schools have in common and the unique institutional contexts that shape their approaches to leadership and make them vital. This enhanced conception of leadership is one that liberal arts institutions are uniquely qualified to instill in students through curricular and co-curricular programming and through the institution’s own efforts to effect positive change.

Some of the goals of the GLAA institute are to articulate the role of liberal education in the development of leadership for social good, explore cultural dimensions of leadership in a global context that lead to social good, identify best practices for curricular and co-curricular programs that develop and apply leadership for social good and enable sharing of and collaborating on resources for leadership development.

The GLAA institute has invited proposals from faculty, staff, and students from all the 29 Alliance institutions for workshops, panel discussions, and case studies that explore the drivers, mechanisms for and challenges of leadership development including curricular and co-curricular opportunities, and how to launch, manage, and evaluate leadership programs. The event will explore themes like Student Leadership, Institutional Leadership and Leadership Programs: Where Student and Institutional Leadership Converge, for meaningful community engagement through social entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and community-based research and learning.

The Alliance will provide travel support (airfare, lodging, and most meals) for one faculty or staff member from each Alliance institution, and will cover half of the airfare for a second faculty or staff member (lodging and most meals will be covered). The Global Alliance understands that the depth of learning at this Institute will be enhanced by the presence of students from across the Alliance. To encourage their attendance and, particularly, to invite them to present or co-present, they have set aside funds for airfare, lodging, and meals during the Institute for one student from each Alliance school.

The deadline for proposal submission is March 12, 2018 and the proposal acceptance announcement will be made on April 16, 2018.
