The latest happenings in the FLAME Community

FLAME University’s undergraduate students, Niqat Patel, Aishwarya Sastry, Shriya Kuchibhotla, Saryu Kulgod have been selected to present their academic papers in an international conference on ‘Consuming the environment-multidisciplinary approaches to urbanization and vulnerability’, at the University of Gävle, Sweden from the 3rd to 5thof December 2017.

Global warming and environmental degradation are becoming a real threat with temperatures rising and natural disaster rates increasing around the world. This can only change if we change our lifestyles. If we do not, it may be too late before we realize the extent of which our environment has been degraded.

This year´s conference highlights urbanization and vulnerability. ‘Consuming the Environment’ is a humanistic research initiative with a multidisciplinary approach seeking partners with innovative knowledge interests.

The call for abstracts was for papers around themes like Media, memories and cultural flows; Celebrities politics and environmental commitment; Strategic environmental communication; History of the environmental discourses; Local media, global environmental threats: Storytelling; Environmental disasters in the risk society; Sustainable city development: Green spaces in urban environments and social change; Engraved memories and heritage: local and indigenous knowledge; Environment education; and Consuming of clothing.

“Vulnerable’ Children and War Cinema: Exploring Varying Representations of ‘Childhood in Refuge’ Through the Film “Turtles Can Fly” authored by Shriya Kuchibhotla and Saryu Kulgod and “The City of Burning Lakes: Media Representation of an Environmental Disaster in Bangalore City” authored by Aishwarya Shatryand Niqat Patel are the FLAME University student academic papers selected for presentation at the conference. The students wrote these papers as part of their course on 'Sociology of Disasters'.
