The Centre for Experimental Social Sciences (CESS) Nuffield - FLAME University is pleased to welcome Stuart Soroka, Michael W. Traugott Collegiate Professor of Communication Studies and Political Science, and Faculty Associate in the Center for Political Studies at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan. Professor Soroka's talk is titled "More Bad News: A Cross-National Psychophysiological Exploration of Negativity Biases in Reactions to Network News." The abstract of his talk is as follows:  "There are vast literatures, stretching across the social sciences, documenting the human tendency to prioritize negative information.  Scholars of political behavior and communication have nevertheless paid limited attention to this dynamic.  And almost all the existing literature - in political communication and otherwise - has ignored the possibility that negativity biases may vary across political and social contexts.  This talk focuses on an ongoing project that aims to fill some of these gaps.  It begins with a discussion of psychophysiological experimentation generally, and then focuses on experiments capturing reactions to network news, across 14 countries, including India.  Results suggest wide variation in individuals’ negativity biases; but variation appears to be much greater within countries than across them."
