His area of special focus has been Latin America, where he has engaged with issues per taining to contemporary history, especially in the context of multiple, lar ge-scale, global, and concomitant crises, including demographic transformat ions (population growth and aging, and rapid urbanization) environmental/ec ological degradation, and economic stress.
