 velopments in economic growth, inequality, education and child mortality an
 d its implications and interactions with gender and fertility in India. Her
  research finds that preference for sons is the main factor explaining why 
 women exceed or under achieve their ideal number of children. Parental pref
 erence for a male child continues to be a significant driver for couples ex
 ceeding the two-child norm in India.  The talk will then discuss gender pre
 ferences which have a significant impact on fertility and the scope for Gov
 ernment policy, its role, impacts and challenges.Short Bio of the speakerDr
  Jaai Parasnis is an applied microeconomist; her research focuses on migrat
 ion, fertility and education and explores gender aspects of the above issue
 s. She is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Monash Univer
 sity, Australia. She holds a PhD in Economics from Monash University. Her c
 urrent work focuses education and occupation choices of young people, parti
 cularly, the role of gender in these choices.  She has been a recipient of 
 research grants in these areas and has published in journals such as Migrat
 ion Studies, Social Indicators Research and Economic Record. Jaai enjoys te
 aching economics and promoting economics education. She is a recipient of T
 eaching Awards including the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She i
 s Deputy Director of Education in the Department of Economics and Course Co
 ordinator for Undergraduate Economics offerings at Monash University, Clayt
 on Campus.
