FLAME Upskill is a series of exclusive workshops for high school students on interdisciplinary topics from various fields spanning humanities, sciences, artificial intelligence, communication, sports and arts amongst others. The series will focus on helping high school students develop crucial skills necessary for a journey of lifelong learning. The series has been conceptualized as a reflection of the liberal education ethos practiced and delivered at FLAME University. Attendees will receive a Letter of Participation in appreciation for their efforts during the workshop. These workshops will be conducted for a limited number of participants and selection will be done on a first-come-first-serve basis.
ACADEMIA IN 2020: DATA AND KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION IN A DIGITAL WORLD

The workshop will trace historical debates about how intuition and observation shape human knowledge, and discuss their relevance in today's digital world, where it's commonly believed that data (a set of observations) 'is the new oil'. In particular, the workshop will discuss how this push towards data-driven knowledge generation has increased the use of data analysis and 'coding' in seemingly unrelated fields of academia, such as biology, economics, psychology, medicine and social sciences.
Prof. Kaushik Gopalan | Ph.D. - Electrical Engineering, University of Central Florida, USA; Associate Professor – Computer Science, FLAME University
Prof. Gopalan holds a doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering. From 2008 to 2011, he was a Researcher with the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center, University of Maryland, College Park. He served as a Scientist with the Space Applications Centre - ISRO, Ahmedabad from 2011-2020.
Kaushik’s research has involved applying statistical analysis and methods to solve a variety of problems in the field of Satellite Remote Sensing, with a focus on the retrieval of geophysical parameters from satellite data; conceptually a “statistical inversion” problem where unmeasurable independent variables are inferred using measurable dependent variables. He has contributed to NASA’s Global Precipitation Mission and Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission, and to ISRO’s Megha - Tropiques, INSAT-3DR, SCATSAT-1 and NAVIC missions in various capacities.
