Dean's Message

Christina Furtado, Dean - FLAME School of Liberal EducationProf. Christina Furtado,
Dean, FLAME School of Liberal Education

Welcome to FLAME, a novel institution that aims to establish and promote liberal education in India. In doing so, we have made a radical departure from the way education is delivered in India. Rather than limiting students to the three streams of Arts, Science and Commerce, we allow students to take courses across disciplines such as Physical and Natural Science, Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine and Performing Arts. Our goal is to expose students to multiple disciplines, to give them the opportunity to truly explore their academic interests so that they can make enlightened choices about their specializations.

Our pedagogy emphasizes critical thinking and effective communication. All our students take courses in Logic, Rhetoric and Critical Writing, and Public Speaking and Debate. Similarly, all our courses are designed to encourage students to think for themselves, which is facilitated by our small class sizes that range from 15-25 students.

Our approach to majors is also very unique compared to the offerings of other universities in India. We believe that knowledge can no longer be compartmentalized, therefore, we offer interdisciplinary majors like Literary and Cultural Studies and International Studies, which include courses in Literature, Critical Theory, International Relations, and History. Our Business major includes typical management subjects like Accounting and Finance, as well as courses in Psychology, Economics, and Political Science.

Over their four years at FLAME, students are exposed to the ground realities through programs like NGO Immersion, the Discover India Project and the Internship Program. Through the NGO Immersion Program students familiarize themselves with the demand and supply-side of socio-economic issues. They learn about the causes of these issues, and they also learn how NGOs emerge and operate to ameliorate these issues. Through the Discover India Program, students travel to different parts of the country to study their cultural heritage and present-day dilemmas facing different communities. Finally, through the internship program, students gain work experience and professional skills.

Our commitment is to empower our students to think for themselves and become responsible, active, global citizens.
