Why Study Dance?
Today, classical dance and classical music perhaps are the only true representatives of Indian culture and Indian ethos. Dance and music were learnt and practiced for the enrichment and enlightenment of a human being. In ancient times these art forms got the status of Vedas [the science of the doctrine of divine things] and were considered the instrument to achieve ultimate salvation. |

The other art forms for one reason or the other have changed in character because of the influence of western techniques, treatments, or philosophies. The abstract aspect of Indian music means expressing oneself through ‘Swar’ [musical note] and ‘Laya’ [rhythm]. In case of dance, the additional dimension of line is also equally important. This abstract aspect truly crosses the boundaries and barriers of language and cultural differences .The enlightenment it exudes is therefore universal, and all pervading. The unique relationship between the teacher and the student is still strong in these traditions. The reason is again the sharing of ‘Swar’ and ‘Laya’, which is abstract, selfless, and pure, in a creative process. It is believed that experiencing and sharing this elation with others leads to humility and self-realization. |
