Suparna Banerjee is an internationally acclaimed Bharatanatyam dance practitioner and scholar, whose creative research has received wide applause from the connoisseurs and critics in India as well as abroad. An enriched background of literature has broadened her spectrum of choreographic creations. She excelled with First Class and Distinction in Bharatanatyam while pursuing her Post-Graduate studies at the Centre for Performing Arts, University of Pune. She qualified UGC’s National Education Test (NET) in Performing Arts for lectureship.
Throughout her professional career, her locus of interest has not only restricted towards University teaching, but her expertise is reflected also in her scholarship in dance research.
She is a visiting faculty in Iowa State University and Penn State University, USA. Besides, she also delivered lecture-demonstrations in various other universities abroad including University of North Carolina, University of Florida, University of Northern Iowa in the USA; University of Dortmund and Münster in Germany and University of Geneva in Switzerland. She rendered professional solo performances in various countries of Europe including Germany, France, Belgium, Switzerland and United Kingdom.
She has also completed advanced studies in the fields of dance criticism and aesthetics. Drawing on her knowledge of music, classical texts and the rich, nuanced vocabulary of classical Indian dance, she explored the layers of meanings through abstract movements, giving them a visual and melodic dimension. Her choreography has been performed internationally and she recently collaborated with Prof. Janice Baker of Iowa State University on “Tap Natyam,” which juxtaposes Bharatanatyam with Tap dance. She has won a number of laurels for her work. At present she is engaged in studying the multi-cultural aspects of Bharatanatyam in World's dance pedagogy.
